This Masterclass goes beyond why young people join deviant groups, get involved in serious violence and become criminally exploited. We look at some of the key concepts and approaches to working with young people in gang impacted environments and further explore some of the challenges to professional practice that these issues present. Hosted by Craig Pinkney, who is a Criminologist, Urban Youth Specialist and CEO of Solve: The Centre for Youth Violence and Conflict CIC (UK). Craig’s an experienced Youth Worker and academically holds multiple qualifications, plus over 16 years of experience as an outreach worker, transformational speaker, international gang exit strategist, mediator, mentor and filmmaker and is well known for working with some of the countries most challenging young people. Craig is also the UK lead for the EU Gangs Project, an advisor for the National Youth Agency, Norfolk County Council (Children’s Services), Violence Reduction Unit (Nottingham), the Ministry of Justice in Jamaica, and a visiting lecturer, specialising in Urban Street Gangs, Youth Violence, Social Media, Race and Crime, Racism and Anti-Racist Practice. At the Showcasing Staffordshire’s Voluntary Community & Social Enterprise Organisations Event, ACT CIC assisted West Midlands Probation Service to identify some of the key Organisations across Staffordshire that can support probation services in helping to reintegrate offenders and ex-offenders back into the community. Youth Mental Health: Awareness & Resilience with Michelle Kelly In honour of Children’s Mental Health, we hosted & discussed Youth Mental Health: Awareness & Resilience. The Masterclass looks at: The history of Mental Health, How Aces may manifest from a young person’s life and present as an adult, How Gangs and Youth violence may impact the ACE’s and Trauma, What Resilience might look like for a Young person & More! Hosted by Michelle Kelly: Michelle is one of our Independent practitioners providing Integrative Therapy and works with both children and adults providing therapeutic Intervention. Michelle also supports our Accredited Gang & Youth Violence course providing pastoral support, and will be delivering our new cohort module around Mental Health & Youth Violence. Hosted by Sara Myers: Sara has worked in the domestic and sexual violence sector for over 20 years, delivering a range of course to statutory and voluntary sector groups and organisations. She has been a front line worker (IDVA) and managed services including refugee and youth services. Sara is now a freelance trainer delivering CSE & Sexual Violence trauma training. Introduction to Modern Day Slavery, Human Trafficking, the National Referral Mechanism and best practice when working with survivors, with Nicole Morris Attendees of this Masterclass will learn the types of exploitation, spotting the signs and what the victim profile looks like. This session discusses in detail the impact of slavery and trafficking, the challenges and common issues when navigating the National Referral Mechanism as well as identifying victims, and how to express concerns as a professional. This session also delivers content around the barriers to survivor engagement and provides resources and key services which can support survivors within the anti-trafficking sector. Attendees will be informed of the pre-NRM Safe Place project within the West Midlands for male survivors and explore the importance around the use of appropriate terminology and sensitive language when engaging with professionals and clients and how we can do this. Hosted by Nicole Morris: Anti-Slavery and Homelessness Development Officer. With previous experience in: Homelessness for St Basils, Youth Intervention Specialist supporting children and young people who were victims of serious youth violence including exploitation at a Hospital and an Advice and Advocacy Coordinator with the WMASN coordinating an all-male safehouse for survivors of modern slavery and trafficking. This event included workshops, talks and information about what is happening within our communities. We discussed peace building, community resilience and how to deal with the trauma of youth violence in our communities. We spoke to various community organisations who are on the frontlines of building peace, who they are, what they have been doing as an organisation and their future plans towards bringing about peace within our communities. We welcomed special guests Craig Pinkney, Criminologist, Urban Youth Specialist and CEO for Solve: The Centre for Youth Violence and Conflict CIC) for a Workshop discussing Social Disorganisation and how to rebuild community resilience: How do we deal with the impact of gangs, youth violence and criminal exploitation within our community? We also had a workshop from Dr Martin Glynn Internationally renowned public speaker, educator, criminologist, with over 3 decades of experience working in criminal justice, public health, and educational settings. Dr Martin discussed ‘Youth Violence: How do people grow through trauma?’ Hosted by Teswal White: Youth Development Specialist, CEO of ACT CIC and Working with Gangs and Youth Violence Level 3 Course Coordinator.
